I've long since given up trying to be a rock star and I just hang around with them instead. When The Band Split Up I started a fanzine called Big Noise in an attempt to support amazing bands who were struggling in the Scottish music scene of the early 1990s. That led to work in newspapers, and I spent 15 happy years as a tabloid journalist, winning awards, being nominated for more and learning a trade like the way you can't any more.

In the interim I was asked to write the official biography of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. When SAHB Story was published in 2004 I'd somehow become the band's manager, and I tried - and failed - to give the story an ending.

In 2005 I wrote Apollo Memories and the following year Big Noise was published. (My first book, published in 1992, was about politics - so you don't want to know.)

I went on to manage the Hugh Trowsers band, who created ill-fated Gretna FC's Scottish Cup anthem, then worked with The Rezillos for a time.

I play drums and keyboards and I've done my time in covers and wedding bands. I'm currently trying to Get The Band Back Together, which is, em, an experience.

In 2009 I went to work for Rock Radio, editing the network website, writing rock news stories, covering festivals and presenting the Sunday morning breakfast show on 96.3 Rock Radio Scotland.

I'm proud to be an award-winning multimedia journalist with a rack of experience behind me - who's worked out that 'writing a book' is a great excuse to switch off the phone.

And that's what I'm doing just now – working on my fifth book, Are Ye Dancin'?, the story of Scotland's dance halls, rock'n'roll, and how yer da met yer maw. Feel free to join in – I'm always looking for more personal memories!
